Spirula spirula

ram's horn squid, tail-light squid

Squid live in mid-water. They have a thin, lightweight, transparent, horny structure which supports the tissue. They hunt fast moving fish. Squid can emit clouds of black ink when stressed.

Small spiral shells are often found on Tallow Beach. These are the external floats of the ram’s horn or tail-light Squid, Spirula spirula, which live in very deep water and are rarely seen.
