family Conidae
general notes on cone shells

family Conidae (cone shells) consists of over 300 species
mainly tropical on coral reefs, in shallow water, under coral or burried in sand, a few live on exposed reef surfaces,
fewer species in temperate waters, intertidally or deeper.

Carnivorous, feeding on worms other molluscs and small fish
detect prey by using the osphradium to 'smell' water passing through the gill chamber.
capture prey by means of a venomous spike which emerges from the pointy end of the shell.
Conus geographus, Conus striatus and Conus textile are all known to have caused human fatalities
