Despite their shark like appearance, being grey with two large dorsal fins, guitarfish are harmless. Their identifying characteristics are that the first dorsal fin is above the pelvic fins, and there are white spots on the sides. They are sometimes found in quite shallow water near the beach. Colour ranges from light to dark grey, smaller ones seem to be lighter coloured.
Distribution = R. australiae
may be a separate endemic species or it may be the same as Rhynchobatus djiddensis which extends into the Indian Ocean and Red Sea.
