Bodianus axillaris, coral hogfish

The juvenile coral hogfish, Bodianus axillaris, (above) is very distinctive being black with large white spots. Adults (below) are completely different, the front half is dark and the back half is white, with large black spots in the axils of the pectoral fins.
Juveniles may pick parasites off other fish.

Distribution widespread tropical Indo-Pacific
Depth shallow reef to deep dropoffs.
