Ostracion meleagris Shaw 1796
black boxfish, whitespotted boxfish
Pictured left is the female black boxfish, Ostracion meleagris. Juveniles have a similar colouration, black with white spots. The spots become smaller and more numerous with age. Males, pictured below, which derive from females are blue with orange spots on the sides.
Family = Ostraciidae - boxfishes
Max size = 20cms
Distribution = widespread tropical Indo-Pacific
