Juvenile False Stonefish, often have two tendrils (like worms) on the lower lip.They may use them as “lures”. In this picture they are bitten off and shortened.

Scorpaenopsis diabolus have an almost bald hump which is indicative of this species. The serrated cheek spines appear wider apart in adults.

The False Stonefish, Scorpaenopsis diabolus, has various colours including white, red, orange, blue green or purple. The inner surface of the pectoral fins are bright yellow orange and can be used to flash a warning.
