The Velvet Seastar, Petricia vernicina, is named for its surface texture. It is generally reddish in colour, with large, respiratory papulae conspicuous on the upper surface. The central disc is large relative to the arms. The Velvet Seastar feeds on sponges, ascidians and bryozoans.
