The Cushion or Eight-armed Seastar, Patiriella calcar, usually has 8 arms, but it may sometimes have 7 or 9.
It is brightly coloured. Patterns on the upper surface may include red, orange, brown, green, blue or black. the underside is uniformly pale.
The Cushion Star can be found in rock pools and shallow water.
It feeds mainly on algae, but also on molluscs.
